In Mexico there are 84.1 million Internet users and 88.2 million cell phone users: ENDUTIH 2020

The National Institute of Statistics and Geography (INEGI), smartphones in collaboration with the Secretariat of Communications and Transport (SCT) and the Federal Institute of Telecommunications (IFT), publishes the National Survey on Availability and Use of Information Technologies in Households (ENDUTIH) 2020.

The estimates of the ENDUTIH 2020 allow characterizing the phenomenon of the availability and use of ICTs at the national, urban, rural levels, by socioeconomic stratum and state and their results are comparable with those provided by INEGI as of 2015.

With this effort, INEGI and the institutions that support the realization of this survey make available to users more and better statistics for decision-making.

In Mexico, in 2020, a population of 84.1 million internet users was estimated, representing 72.0% of the population aged six and over. This figure reveals an increase of 1.9 percentage points compared to that registered in 2019 (70.1%).

Internet users are 71.3% of women and 72.7% of men aged 6 years or older residing in the country. 

The survey estimates that 78.3% of the population located in urban areas are users, while in rural areas the proportion is 50.4 percent. In 2019 users in urban areas were estimated at 76.6% and in rural areas the estimate was 47.7%.

The three main means for connecting users to the internet in 2020 were: smartphone with 96.0%, laptop with 33.7% and with TV with internet access 22.2 percent.

The main activities carried out by Internet users in 2020 are communicating (93.8%), searching for information (91.0%) and accessing social networks (89.0%). 

The survey estimates that in 2020 there are 88.2 million cell phone users, representing 75.5% of the population aged six and older. In 2019 the proportion was 75.1% (86.5 million users).
Nine out of ten cell phone users have a smartphone. Between 2019 and 2020, users who only had smartphones registered a growth of 3.5 percentage points (88.1% to 91.6%). 

The survey estimates that, in 2020, of users who connect to the internet through their cell phone, smart (Smartphone), there is an increase in those who connect only by Wi Fi, which went from 9.4% in 2019 to 13.7% in 2020. 

During 2020, an estimated 44.4 million computer users were estimated, representing 38.0% of the total population in this age range. Likewise, the percentage of computer users observed is 5.0% lower than that registered in 2019.

The main activities of computer users at home are: schoolwork (54.9%) -almost ten percentage points more than in 2019-, work activities (42.8%) and as a means of training (30.6%). 

In 2020, out of 36.0 million households, 76.6% have at least one digital TV (0.1% more compared to 2019).

Also, in 2020 the number of households that have only digital television increased by 1.4 million compared to 2019. In this way, 96.1% of households in the country receive the digital television signal from digital television, pay television signal or set-top box.

FREE-TO-AIR TELEVISION USERS

In 2020, 71.5 million people are users of free-to-air television signal (61.2% of the total population aged six and over) and on average watch it 2.41 hours a week.

Of the free-to-air TV signal users, 45.8 million (64.1%) watch news programs, 38.4 million (53.7%) watch movies and 31.4 million (43.9%) watch soap operas.

41.0 million people are radio users (35.1% of inhabitants aged 6 and over) and listen to programming 2.57 hours on average per week.

Of radio users, 82.8% listen to entertainment programs, 64.3% listen to newscasts and 21.1% listen to sports-related programs.
